I was a Canadian traveller headed from NW British Columbia to Puerto Vallarta with my 3 cats September 8, 2025 and while on the road, my truck started having issues with overheating. I stopped by Brakemasters #236 for an oil change and a radiator flush., thinking Mexican dust and NW BC dirt might've clogged things. Turns out my issue was much larger than that.
After receiving the quote for $1700USD for work required (water pump, thermostat sensor casing, coolant lines, oil change) and considered a safety issue, the team at #236 was patient while I worked out financing the rather large bill. After we got the bill settled, they got to work. I was told 6 hours labour, so myself and the cats settled in their waiting room for what would be the better part of the day. Jennifer was amazing to us. Very patient while my bored and curious cats decided they just had to walk around and check the place out...and without considering boundaries...that included her desk! She was extremely kind, very professional, and kept me informed every step of the way. She put me at ease when we were already facing a challenging day. I appreciated that grace and patience while we were dealing with the issues.
The rockstar tech, had me out within 3 hours, deferring his lunch, and working double time allowing me peace of mind while I continued my trip. And while the unexpected cost wasn't planned and presented extra stress no one needs, I appreciated their concern regarding my safety and the safety of others sharing the road with me. I also appreciated how hard they worked to get me back on the road quickly and safely.
If I had one comment/feedback that could help this team improve, there is one person there that could work on their people skills. I recognize that daily they get to hear excuses and reasons why people can't perform or afford the work, I used to be a service advisor, so I get it, it can be soul sucking....but I felt as if this person could exercise more compassion, empathize a little better and recognize that not everybody has extra set aside for emergencies, some of us live paycheque to paycheque, and I apologize for the time I took trying to get payment together. Scaring me into a large unexpected purchase by being sarcastic about whether I'll make it safely put me in an extremely hard place, and definitely influenced my decision to get the work done now, and at that establishment. I wasn't risking going further. Perhaps putting yourself in the drivers seat of your customers might influence how you can better support your customers in the future, without resorting to guilting them into it.
Thank you to the team at #236 for taking a not-so-great experience and making it as good as it can be. Thanks for your care, your professionalism, your patience with my furkids, and patience while we worked out payment as quickly as possible. Thank you for taking the time to explain the work and the warranty for your work before I left, so i could have peace of mind. I made it safely and had no issues for the remainder of my trip.
