The summer months are upon us! That means it’s going to get a lot warmer inside your car.
This can be a serious problem for young children as well as pets.
Temperatures drastically increase in cars that are parked for long periods of time in parking lots. The University of Georgia did a study showing how quickly temperatures can rise in a car parked in a parking lot on a 90-degree day.
- Parked 5 minutes: +7 degrees F (90 degrees outside; 97 degrees in your car)
- Parked 10 minutes: +13 degrees F (90 degrees outside; 103 degrees in your car)
- Parked 30 minutes: +29 degrees F (90 degrees outside; 119 degrees in your car)
- Parked 60 minutes: +47 degrees F (90 degrees outside; 137 degrees in your car)
That means it’s more than 135 degrees inside a car that is parked for an hour in a parking lot on a 90-degree day.
This is unsafe for children as well as pets. In the same study by the University of Georgia, it said that approximately 40 children die every year in closed cars on hot days.
To protect against this, you should:
- Never leave your children unattended in a parked car
- Leave pets at home on hot days
- Leave water in car and windows open for pets on semi-hot days
- Keep car and A/C running if you’re in the car with child or pets
Following these tips will help to keep your children and pets safe this summer. Also, be sure to get your car’s A/C regularly checked. It may need Albuquerque auto air conditioning repair or El Paso auto air conditioning repair.
